Global climate change is having a significant impact on biodiversity throughout the world. This impact can be seen through changes in habitat, extinction of species, and disruption of ecosystems. The earth’s rising average temperature due to greenhouse gas emissions serves as a major factor changing weather and environmental patterns. These changes result in serious threats to various species, both animals and plants. One of the most obvious impacts is habitat change. Natural habitats such as forests, coral reefs and tundra are affected by rising temperatures. For example, ocean warming causes coral reef bleaching resulting in habitat loss for many marine species. Balanced ecosystems are disrupted, and species that depend on coral reefs for shelter are forced to migrate or risk extinction. Species extinction is another serious impact. As temperatures rise, species that cannot adapt quickly will face a high risk of not surviving. The decline in populations of various species on land and in the ocean has given clear signs of approaching extinction. Bird, mammal, and amphibian species are some examples, with an increasing number of species listed as endangered by UNESCO and other conservation agencies. Plants that depend on soil moisture experience stress, which impacts fauna that use plants as a food source. Limited resources can cause starvation among animal populations. The impact of climate change on biodiversity not only threatens individual species, but can also affect ecological networks and their function.
