World Tsunami: Causes and Impact

Tsunamis, powerful ocean waves, are often caused by shifting tectonic plates on the sea floor. The main causes of tsunamis include underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides at sea. When an earthquake occurs, the energy released creates large waves that travel at high speed. For example, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake in Sumatra in 2004 resulted in a tsunami that devastated coastal areas in several countries.
