What Is Love?

love

A good example of love is when a person cares for another person’s needs. It can be expressed through various acts, including eating a healthy meal, calling a friend to offer support, or reading a self-improvement article. Elie Wiesel once said that the opposite of love is indifference. This statement highlights a central aspect of love: the feeling of satisfaction when another person is happy.

The Ancient Greeks grouped love into several categories. One category was storge, which was the love between family members, while another was phila, which was a kind of friendship. In addition to these types of love, there was also agape, which was the kind of love that we experience when we love another person.

While this view has a kernel of truth, it fails to capture the creative aspect of love. It explains that love is not simply a response to the antecedent value of the object. Thus, any account of love that understands evaluation through the lens of appraisal is missing something. It’s important to note that a person’s love for another person is more complicated than its antecedent value.

Love is the glue that holds relationships together. It is biological and deeply emotional, yet it is hard to define. Some people confuse it with attraction, lust, and companionship. Others define love as an intense feeling of euphoria. But whatever the definition, it is an important part of our lives. Love is a very powerful emotion.
